About this place
Biting into a plump, handmade gyoza while grazing on a classic noodle bowl or wok-tossed stir-fry is one of the distinct pleasures of a Japanese neighborhood Chinese diner. Located in Sugamo, Toshima Ward, Juraku is an everyday Chinese restaurant offering an extensive lineup of dumplings, noodles, and teishoku set meals. Billed prominently on the menu, the signature gyoza can be ordered as a full plate of 5 or a smaller serving of 3, making it an easy add-on to any ramen or set meal.
The noodle selection covers ample ground. Alongside classic shoyu ramen and vegetable-loaded tanmen, the kitchen cooks distinctive specialties such as hearty, thickened Cantonese noodles, salt-seasoned shrimp soba, and sour-and-spicy sanratanmen. The viscous, glossy broth clings closely to the noodles, carrying the savory essence of seafood and vegetables for a deeply comforting bowl.
For a heavier rice meal, the teishoku sets are reliable choices, including pork and vegetable stir-fry, liver with garlic chives, and pork with eggplant. The restaurant also features a half-bowl and half-noodle set, pairing half shoyu ramen and 3 gyoza with rice bowls like beef and bell pepper over rice, yakiniku don, or chukadon, ideal for diners who want a bit of everything.
With counter seating at the front and tables toward the back, Juraku welcomes solo diners dropping by for lunch as well as those unwinding with an evening drink. Guests can pair small side dishes with bottled beer, draft beer, or sours; takeout is also available. Payment is cash only, so it is best to carry cash before taking a seat.
